BlackBerry hat in letzter Zeit einige Aktivitäten unternommen, um das strategische Geschäftsfeld zum Internet of Things im Unternehmen etablieren. Mit dem Project Ion, das einen Beitrag von BlackBerry zum Internet of Things liefert, soll eine Grundlage für eine sichere öffentliche Applikationsplattform geschaffen werden. Um dabei die wichtige Zusammenarbeit von Maschinen zu Maschinen sicher zu stellen, vernetzt man sich auch mit anderen Organisationen im Rahmen von strategischen Partnerschaften.

Project Ion im Sinne der Internet of Things Aktivitäten wird nun direkt einem neu geschaffenen Geschäftsbereich zugeordnet. Er nennt sich BlackBerry Technology Solutions (BTS) und beinhaltet zudem auch die innovativen Themenfelder wie die QNX-Plattform, Certicom (Krypto-Apps) und die Paratek-Antennen-Technologie. BTS wird Dr. Sandeep Chennakeshu vorstehen, den BlackBerry als President neu ans Bord holt. Sandeep Chennakeshu war unter anderem beim Halbleiterhersteller Freescale tätig und vormals auch CTO von Sony-Ericsson. Er selbst hält 73 Patente auf Erfindungen.

John Chen begründet die Neuordnung der innovativen Themenbereiche damit, dass sie durch das Schaffen von Synergien und dem Erzeugen neuer Einkommensquellen die turnaround-Strategie noch stärker unterstützen werden.

announced today that it has named Dr. Sandeep Chennakeshu to lead a new business unit to be called BlackBerry Technology Solutions, or BTS. The BTS business unit comprises BlackBerry’s innovative technology assets, including:  QNX (embedded software), Project Ion (Internet of Things application platform), Certicom (cryptography applications), and Paratek (RF antenna tuning), as well as BlackBerry’s extensive patent portfolio.

Sandeep Chennakeshu has been engaged in research, product development, IP creation/licensing and general management in the wireless, electronics and semiconductor industry for over 25 years, including serving as President of Ericsson Mobile Platforms and CTO of Sony-Ericsson.  He is a named inventor on 73 patents and a Fellow of the IEEE.
