BlackBerry stellt das neue OS7 BlackBerry 9720 offiziell vor

Das schon etwas länger herumgeisterne BlackBerry 9720 wurde soeben in einer Pressemeldung offiziell vorgestellt. Es handelt sich hier allerdings nicht um eines der neuen Geräte mit BlackBerry OS 10, sondern ein Modell mit BlackBerry OS 7.1. Verbaut ist ein 2,8“ Zoll Touch-Screen mit einer Auflösung von 480×360 mit einer Pixeldichte von 214ppi. Ähnlich wie beim Curve 9360 ist auch in diesem Modell ein FM-Radio eingebaut. Am Rand befindet sich eine gesonderte Taste für den Zugriff auf den BBM. Das Telefon soll wohl eher für Entwicklungsmärkte gedacht sein und wird wohl so schnell nicht auf dem deutschen Markt erscheinen. Das OS 7.1 auf wurde allerdings noch ein wenig aufgebohrt und so finden sich einige Elemente wie z.B. ein angepasster Lock-Screen der stark an BlackBerry 10 erinnert in diesem Update des alten OS wieder. BlackBerry ruft Ausschuss zur Untersuchung von strategischen Alternativen ins Leben

BlackBerry hat heute in einer Pressemeldung die Gründung eines Ausschusses bekannt gegeben in dessen Rahmen strategische Alternativen untersucht werden sollen um die Verbreitung von BlackBerry 10 zu verbessern und zu beschleunigen. Der Ausschuss setzt sich dabei aus Thorsten Heins, Barbara Stymiest, Richard Lynch sowie Bert Nordberg zusammen und wird unter dem Vorsitz von Timithy Dattels geleitet. Während bereits letztes Jahr eine ähnliche Untersuchung angekündigt und durchgeführt blieb diese scheinbar ohne Ergebnis. Dieses mal gibt es allerdings einen entscheidenden Unterschied.  In der Pressemeldung wird erstmalig neben den üblichen Optionen eines Joint Ventures oder strategischen Partnerschaften auch der Verkauf der Firma in Erwägung gezogen.

BlackBerry ist also offen für jeglichen Optionen um die Platform BlackBerry 10 weiter, schneller und erfolgreicher voranzutreiben. In der Pressemeldung heißt es außerdem, dass dieser Ausschuss nicht zwingend zu einem Ergebnis kommen muss, sondern lediglich alle Optionen untersucht werden. Auch wenn ich persönlich einen Verkauf für eine der letzten Optionen halte, wer wäre euer Favorit für den Kauf?

WATERLOO, ONTARIO – BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSX:BB), a world leader in the mobile communications market, today announced that the Company’s Board of Directors has formed a Special Committee to explore strategic alternatives to enhance value and increase scale in order to accelerate BlackBerry 10 deployment.  These alternatives could include, among others, possible joint ventures, strategic partnerships or alliances, a sale of the Company or other possible transactions.

The Special Committee of the Board is comprised of Barbara Stymiest, Thorsten Heins, Richard Lynch and Bert Nordberg, and will be chaired by Timothy Dattels.

With the announcement of the Special Committee, Prem Watsa, Chairman and CEO of Fairfax Financial informed the Company that he felt it was appropriate to resign due to potential conflicts that may arise during the process.  Fairfax Financial is the largest BlackBerry shareholder. Mr. Watsa said, „I continue to be a strong supporter of the Company, the Board and Management as they move forward during this process, and Fairfax Financial has no current intention of selling its shares.“

“During the past year, management and the Board have been focused on launching the BlackBerry 10 platform and BES 10, establishing a strong financial position, and evaluating the best approach to delivering long-term value for customers and shareholders,” said Timothy Dattels, Chairman of BlackBerry’s Special Committee of the Board.  “Given the importance and strength of our technology, and the evolving industry and competitive landscape, we believe that now is the right time to explore strategic alternatives.”

Thorsten Heins, President and Chief Executive Officer of BlackBerry, added, “We continue to see compelling long-term opportunities for BlackBerry 10, we have exceptional technology that customers are embracing, we have a strong balance sheet and we are pleased with the progress that has been made in our transition.  As the Special Committee focuses on exploring alternatives, we will be continuing with our strategy of reducing cost, driving efficiency and accelerating the deployment of BES 10, as well as driving adoption of BlackBerry 10 smartphones, launching the multi-platform BBM social messaging service, and pursuing mobile computing opportunities by leveraging the secure and reliable BlackBerry Global Data Network.”

There can be no assurance that this exploration process will result in any transaction. BlackBerry 10.2 bringt lang erwartete Unterstützung für rSAP

Die Frage, ob BlackBerry 10 rSAP unterstützt trifft uns in letzter Zeit immer häufiger. Deshalb wird es Einige wohl ganz besonders freuen, dass rSAP ab 10.2 implementiert sein wird. rSAP oder auch Remote SIM Access Profile ist ein Datenübertragungsprotokoll von Bluetooth und wird von z.B. Fahrzeugen verwendet um eine direkte Verbindung mit der SIM Karte des Telefons herzustellen. Das hat den Vorteil, dass eine im Auto verbaute Antenne genutzt werden kann. Meist bedeutet dies gleichzeitig aber auch, dass z.B. keine Daten mehr auf dem Telefon empfangen werden können, da die SIM ja praktisch im Auto eingebunden ist. Häufig möchte man aber im Auto (zumindest wenn man selber fährt) sowieso nur Telefonieren und mit der fahrzeugeigenen Antenne ist da die Empfangsqualität meistens um einiges besser. Wann genau wir mit dem Update auf 10.2 rechnen können ist wie immer nicht genau bekannt. Ich schätze allerdings, dass wird spätestens bis Ende des Jahres (eher früher) damit rechnen können.

So ein kleines bisschen  hätte man es ja ahnen können, nachdem das P’9981 trotz des lächerlich hohen Preises ja doch recht erfolgreich war. Scheinbar sind nun erste Bilder einer möglich Z10 Porsche Design BlackBerry 10 Variante aufgetaucht. Mein Vietnamesisch ist zwar nicht all zu gut, aber wenn Google Translate nicht zu schlecht gearbeitet hat, dann ist sogar von zwei Porsche Design Varianten die Rede. Möglicherweise kommen wir also bald in den Genuss einer Q10 und Z10 Porsche Design Edition. Da bereits das P’9981 eine Freude war kann ich es kaum erwarten und hoffe, dass diese beiden Geräte Wirklichkeit werden. Die Zeichen dafür stehen ganz gut, konnte man doch in den Deviceconfigs schon zwei bisher unbekannte Bezeichner aus der N-Series und L-Series entdecken. BlackBerry 10.1 MR Update bringt „Simple Password“ und mehr

BlackBerry stellt seit gestern Abend eine neue, offizielle Version von BlackBerry 10.1 zur Verfügung. Wie immer wird dieses Update Anbieterabhängig verteilt, momentan sehe ich am Q10 mit Vodafone noch keine neue Version. Mit dem Maintainance Release gibt es einige Verbesserungen am OS die ab der Version 10.1.0.4181 / 10.1.0.4537 oder höher. Manche der Features waren bereits in den Leaks der letzten Wochen enthalten. Die „größten“ Änderungen/Neuerungen sind dabei:

  • Simple Password – Ihr könnt nun ein einfaches Passwort (also nur Zahlen) zum Sperren eures Gerätes definieren. Beim entsperren wird dann auch nur eine numerische Tastatur angezeigt
  • Neue Einführungstutorials
  • Neue Geste um zwischen E-Mails zu navigieren: Swipe nach Rechts und dann runter ->nächste Nachricht, Swipe nach rechts und dann hoch -> vorherige Nachricht
  • Q10: Shortcut „U“ für die letzte, ungelesene Nachricht
  • Zwei-Faktor-Authentifizierung für Twitter und LinkedIn
  • Für die E-Mail-Synchronisierung mit IMAP oder ActiveSync kann man nun die Zeit der Aufbewahrung auf unbegrenzt schalten (vorher nur 30 Tage afaik)
  • uvm.

Eine weitere Neuerung, die ich gestern bereits auf Twitter erwähnt hatte, ist bei der Einrichtung von GMail Konten zu sehen. Nach der Debatte um die Übertragung von Passwörtern an BlackBerry Server wird hier nun der OAuth Standard zur Einrichtung verwendet.
